Along with our workshops and panels, WCIAA wants you to walk away from our conferences with as much knowledge as possible to keep making art.
Melted Crayon Patina Demonstration
Join Tom Fox for an hour or so as he demonstrates and discusses a novel surface treatment that he has used over the years to bring color to his cast iron sculpture. There was a time in his life when he was scolded for using these materials. Later on, the use of these materials evolved as an early form of inspiration that ultimately became part of his work in iron. The process involves inexpensive, familiar materials and equipment that are easily obtained. You may already have these items in your studio. The practice renders a unique surface that will protect cast iron from oxidation. Give yourself the opportunity to add another finishing technique to those you already possess. Tom will discuss the optimum application and the limitations of this practice as well as experiment with some other pigment rich materials.

Fiber Ladle Demonstration
Join Stacey Rathert and Ted Uran for a hands-on demonstration of fiber ladle making, based on techniques developed and shared by Linda Walsh. The demonstration will introduce the process of constructing lightweight, refractory fiber ladles for working with molten iron, from forming and preparing the ladle through considerations for safe use during a pour. This session honors Linda’s contributions to the cast iron community while continuing the exchange of practical knowledge that is central to WCIAA.
