    Ceramic Shell Workshop

The ceramic shell casting process starts with a wax piece – a pattern- desired to be cast in metal. In this workshop you will take a wax positive and learn how to navigate the world of lost wax casting.  With the help of Ransom and Randolph and 25 years of experience, join David Lobdell in learning how to get from wax to iron utilizing ceramic shell mold making.

Each workshop participant is limited to a wax pattern weighing a maximum of 7 lbs.

Create iron castings using the lost wax method of ceramic shell. Learn from the best. David Lobdell and Chris Meyer combined have two hundred and forty six years of lost wax casting experience (plus or minus). It’s best to bring your own wax patterns ready for spruing but all experience levels welcome. Bring your own personal safety equipment including: safety glasses, respirator preferred or dust mask, Nitrile gloves.

    20×20″   Size Limitation Please.

    $60 per participant

Tiny Iron, Lost Wax – Centrifugal Casting

Small wax patterns (by small I mean weighing less than 26.8 grams and small enough to fit

into a soup can) are invested, burnt out and cast using a centrifugal casting machine.

Alison Ouellette-Kirby, and Noah Kirby will be teaching this workshop.

    $60 per participant

    Reaction Mold Workshop.

Participants will learn how to make simple yet effective reaction molds. For this workshop we will focus on making “thunder boxes” or “fire boxes”, which are plywood or OSB boxes made several layers thick and filled with all manner of consumable natural materials such as; saw dust, paper, wooden patterns, drywall, dry leaves or other plant matter. Participants may also stack cutout patterns of plywood to create their reaction mold.  These types of molds are mostly produce a fireball from the mold vents. Reaction molds can be designed in many different configurations. Participants should bring any materials they want to include in their thunder boxes but all materials to be included must be approved by the workshop leader and performance pour coordinator prior to their inclusion in any mold. Participants will pour their reaction molds during the conference performance pour and should arrive prepared with appropriate personal protective equipment for the performance pour. Workshop fee includes up to two sheets of OSB or plywood, basic implements of construction, hardware and up to 50 lbs. of iron. This workshop will be taught with Jordan Eaton and Kelly Ludeking.

    $75 per participant

    limited to 10 – 15 participants max.
